Root Canal Therapy, Eagan Minnesota, 651-687-0789

A root canal is the most frequently used endodontic treatment that includes removing infected pulp tissue and then sealing the nerve canal inside the tooth. By performing this procedure, the tooth’s structure is saved while infection is eradicated.

If this treatment is not performed, bacterial byproducts build up at the root tip and the infection of the pulp can spread to the surrounding bone. This results in pain and swelling, and without this treatment your tooth would likely have to be removed.

What are the signs that a root canal is needed?

  • Severe tooth pain while chewing
  • Your tooth pain wakes you up at night
  • Teeth that are highly sensitive to hot or cold, with the sensitivity lingering for some time.
  • Discoloration or darkening of the tooth
  • Swollen gums in the area of the infected tooth

What does the treatment involve?

First, an opening is made in the crown of the tooth in order to remove the infected pulp. The canal is then thoroughly cleaned by the doctor, followed by a permanent and natural looking filling or crown. In some circumstances, your doctor may elect to perform this procedure in multiple visits, and put a temporary crown on the tooth. The temporary will be taken off at the subsequent visit(s) with more infected material being removed and more cleaning to be done--followed by the application of the permanent filling or crown.

With such a high success rate, root canals are a standard and common practice that can help save your tooth and last a lifetime. If you are suffering from any of the above signs or symptoms, maybe root canal therapy is in order.
